There has been a plethora of substances used to enhance nails since approximately 3000 BC, but it was at the turn of the 19th Century, that nails were tinted with red oils and polished or buffed rather than painted to achieve the perfect manicure.

Cutex produced the first manufactured nail polish in 1917, and often painted nails, were worn in place of gloves to cover up unsightly nails.

Revlon began selling the first modern style of nail polish that we know today in 1932, and we haven’t stopped wearing it since!

As with red lipstick, red nail polish now comes in a myriad of shades with alluring names such as Fishnet Stockings, Kitten Heels, Double Decker Red, Starlet and Celebrity Bash, and is the iconic accessory of glamorous Old Hollywood movies such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Can Can.

Once again according to beauty experts, shades of red nail polish are worn relative to your outfit.

If you are wearing black or dark colours, a deep red such as OPI Mrs O’Learys BBQ would compliment your outfit.

By contrast with denim or summer wear, a brighter, more fun shade is suitable.

Of course, if you like the idea of red nail polish, but are slightly more retiring or conservative than the likes of Marilyn Monroe or Rita Hayworth, then a paler shade would give you the boost of glamour you are seeking.

When applying red nail polish, the same preparation tips that apply to red lipstick, apply to your nails. Make sure that you have manicured your nails, natural or enhancements, so that you have removed your cuticles and shaped your nails carefully. Apply with precision, base, two coats and a top coat and avoid the cuticle by painting the red a millimetre away from the cuticles to prevent run-in. Afterwards, moisturise your nail edges and fingertips with solar oil.

Red nail polish is the epitomy of drama and sophistication. Those vintage Hollywood icons knew how to wear it like they meant it.
